Exalted Magistrate, esteemed gentlemen! We earnestly ask the exalted Magistrate to consider the following in respect of the Magistrate's decree on the collection of levies on Jews engaged in speculation: that of the existing Jewish families there are only 7 who actually engage in speculation, while the remaining 11, due to their apparent poverty, are unable to do it. Therefore, taking into account the very small number of members of the Jewish community in this city, the Tolerance Tax of 311 florins of conventional currency is already more than enough, and it is quite a burden that we are obliged to pay. Therefore, we ask the exalted Magistrate to, if not for legal and political reasons than out of pure compassion, take into account the fact that we are already burdened with the Tolerance Tax that other citizens do not pay, and to oblige that is more than enough for these families. So, we ask the exalted Magistrate to reduce the levy we are obliged to pay in addition to the mentioned tax, both now and in the future. With due respect and appreciation, always at your service in every sense, in Sombor on January 11, 1829. Humble servants of servants Of the exalted Magistrate Jews of the city of Sombor To the exalted Magistrate of the free royal city of Sombor, esteemed gentleman The members of the Jewish community, for the reasons stated in the document, humbly pray that the amount of their taxes be generously reduced both now and in the years to come.
