Exalted Magistrate and much respected gentlemen! On the topic of the request of a Jew, a member of the Jewish community, Lazari Stein, who bought a shop from a merchant from Kranjska, Georgio Kopp , and opened another one within our city community, and asks us to give him permission to do so, we humbly state the following decision: Since the Jew Stein is asking for permission to open another store in our city community because it is not enough for him that he received a special privilege from the exalted Magistrate to open one store earlier, so he wants to open another near the royal city of Subotica, and he is still not allowed to do that. Namely, this Jew, according to the information of the exalted Magistrate, bought and opened a shop from Senator Demetrovits (Demetrovic) last year. However, Article 38.1791 issued by our exalted Magistrate states that Jews residing in free royal cities must retain the status in which they already were and that a new store may be opened by a protocol decision of the exalted Magistrate only if the previous one is for justified and valid reasons. closed, and therefore the exalted Magistrate officially makes the following decision: Despite the fact that he was not allowed to do so, the said Jew arbitrarily carried out his intention by buying goods and another shop from the said Kopp, and in a manner contrary to the law on trade, goods transferred from one trade to another in an effort to further increase its revenues, notwithstanding the existing ban and gross violation of existing laws. If this continues, we and our descendants will be forced to look with regret at the open violation of the law and something that does undoubted damage to the community. We ask, therefore, that this open violation of the law be stopped and that the established laws of this city be preserved, according to which the trade guild also functions and makes sure that trade shops never lack the necessary goods. Finally, we ask that his request for the opening of another shop be officially rejected by the Magistrate and that the shop be closed by law. Always grateful and humbly faithful. To the Exalted Magistrate In Sombor, January 5, 1799. Humble servants Rozsa Johannovits (Roza Johanovic), signed above Georgius Demetrovits (Georgije Demetrovic), Deputy President of the Trade Guild, for merchants of both faiths who belong to the city community On January 9, 1799. To the Exalted Magistrate of the free royal city of Sombor, much respected gentleman A humble response from merchants of both faiths who belong to the city community, at the request of the Jew Lazari Stein Transcript Wise and respected! According to the decision of His Most Holy Majesty, the Jew Aaroni Polyak (Aaron Poljak) cannot be given a permit to live and trade within this city community: This decision is made known and entrusted to the city Magistrate. Issued by the Local Royal Council of Hungary, in Buda on November 29, 1793. Their well-meaning Count Carolus Zichy (Karol Zichi), in his own hand and count Jozef Zigray (Josephus Zigray), in his own handwriting It stands together with the original in the city archives and was issued on December 18, 1793 by Martinus Lenard (Martin Lenard), in his own hand, a notary I declare that this transcript is completely identical to the original that I personally compiled and that it agrees with it in everything. Avram Blagojevic The sworn city chancellor Excerpt from the protocol At the request of citizens and merchants of both faiths who belong to the city community, and on the topic of Franciscum Stain (Franjo Stein), a member of the Jewish community, who, according to the Magistrate, opened a shop within the city community, we try to say the following on the topic of Stein. Decision: According to Article 38 of 1791, which stipulates that Jews in free royal cities must retain the status and number in which they were previously located, it is not possible by law to open additional Jewish trade; therefore, the Magistrate decides that the store opened without the Magistrate's permission be closed immediately and that the Jews be further prevented from opening trade shops beyond the existing number.
