Exalted Magistrate and esteemed gentlemen!

I ask the esteemed Magistrate to inform the members of the Jewish community about the complaint I made in the Jewish synagogue before Senators Nikola Simić (Nicolaus Simits), Đorđe Štrilić (Georgius Sztrilis) and Konstantin Janković (Constantinus Jankovits), that the mentioned Jews should not admit their relatives as guests in their home in the future, because it is contrary to Jewish ordinances and harms the tenants of public inns, and to further threaten them that otherwise they will bear the consequences and punishment. It happened, however, that a member of the Jewish community, Philip Hajduska (Philippus Hajduska), in opposition to this decree, received for several days as guests one Jew from Kula and another from Topola, and that this happened in two or three times, regardless of the fact that a fine of 600 florins is envisaged for that crime, and he further stated that he will continue to do so in the future. Since similar actions will severely damage me due to the payment of the annual rent, and despite the prescribed fine of 600 florins, it is obvious that other members of the Jewish community will continue to do so, causing me great loss, I earnestly ask the exalted Magistrate to prevent this, and to fine Philip Hajduska as an example, as well as to try to supervise what is happening with these matters and to appoint one of the Magistrates as a supervisor who would check this situation in the Jewish community, and to determine the annual lease tax for the preparation of food for foreigners for the next 20 years, while maintaining the already existing lease amount of 127 florins for serving wine.

Persevering in his piety and faith, in Sombor on January 10, 1809, the humble servant Isaac Oesterreicher (Isacus Osztereicher), a Jew and tenant of the public inn of the Jewish community.

It was decided:
To request an answer from Filip Hajduska within 5 days. In the Sombor Senate on January 20, 1809
Emeric .......... notary

To the Exalted Magistrate of the free royal city of Sombor, esteemed gentleman.
Isaac Oesterreicher, the tenant of the Jewish community's public inn, demands and humbly begs that a member of the Jewish community, Filip Hajduska, be fined for accomodating foreign Jews in his home, and demands that one of the Magistrates be appointed as a supervisor, who will in addition set a fee for serving food to foreigners for the next 20 years.

Exalted Magistrate and esteemed gentlemen!

I have the following answer to Isaac Oesterreicher's statement: the person in question stated that on two or three occasions I received a Jew from Kula and one from Topola for food and drink in my home for several days, and that I stated that I plan to do so in the future, although a fine was provided for that in the amount of 600 florins. It is true, however, that I received a single Jew from Kula only once, which can be confirmed by the esteemed gentleman, the supreme judge, Mr. Stefan Putnik (Stephanus Putnik), and therefore I do not think that this accusation of his is justified and is based only on his words. At the same time, it is contrary to paternal laws, as well as to a natural sense of justice and right. In other respects, there is a decree on the bidding lease of a public Jewish inn, indeed with the stipulation that members of the Jewish community are forbidden under penalty of 12 florins to receive Jewish foreigners for housing and food. I therefore on my own behalf and on behalf of other members of the Jewish community ask to abolish this provision and that members of the Jewish community are allowed to have the opportunity to receive their relatives, friends, comrades or the poor who come to this city community, or those Jews who are just passing through here, without any monetary compensation. Exalted Magistrate, since there are already enough restrictions for Jews and they are deprived of ways to present their requests differently, we ask that this ban is relaxed and that we are allowed to accept foreign Jews into our homes and residences, as paternal laws allow everyone to freely use and dispose of their property, and as the basic principles of civic life ultimately dictate, and finally the laws of God tell us to help our neighbors in accordance with our abilities. Therefore, the laws should be interpreted and applied in above-mentioned way, and also the notification is necessary if someone’s money has been taken. Also, we ask that there no longer exists a fine for those who provide hospitality and food to foreign Jews. Persevering in his piety and faith, in Sombor on February 18, 1809, the humble servant Filip Hajduska, a member of the Jewish community and the applicant on behalf of all its other members.

To the exalted Magistrate of the free Royal City of Sombor, the esteemed gentleman, the answer of Filip Hajduska, a member of the Jewish community, to the letter of Isaac Oesterreicher, also a member.

A Jew from Kula Isak stated that Filip Hajduška received him for an overnight stay and we are making this known to the praised Magistrate.
In Sombor, December 2, 1808.
